Getting into the city

Istanbul Airport (IST) & Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)

Istanbul has two main airports. IST is on the European side (northwest). SAW is on the Asian side (southeast). Your hotel district decides which transfer makes sense — and how long it takes.

Private transfer
Door-to-door after a long flight — fixed price, no metro changes with bags. Best for late arrivals, families and heavy luggage.
Havaist / Havabus coaches
Airport coaches run to Taksim, Kadıköy and other hubs. Cheaper than a taxi; allow extra time in rush hour (07:30–10:00 and 17:00–20:00).
Metro + Marmaray
IST and SAW both connect by rail toward the city. Good if you travel light and prefer predictable timing over door-to-door convenience.
Official taxi queue
Use the marked taxi rank or a hotel-booked car. Agree the meter is on — skip unmarked offers inside arrivals.

Tip: if your hotel is in Sultanahmet and you land at SAW late at night, a pre-booked transfer usually beats changing coaches with luggage.

Getting around

Istanbulkart & public transport

The city runs on Istanbulkart (contactless travel card) for metro, tram, bus, metrobus and many ferries. Tap once per person — one card can be shared if each traveller taps separately.

Where to buy & top up
Machines at airports, metro stations and some kiosks. Cards and cash usually both work. Keep a small balance — transfers between modes are discounted within a time window.
Tram T1 (tourist spine)
Sultanahmet → Gülhane → Eminönü → Karaköy → Kabataş. Use it for Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Blue Mosque area and ferry piers.
Metro for longer hops
M2 (Taksim–Şişhane) and other lines beat surface traffic for longer European-side trips. Follow station maps in English / Turkish.
Ferries across the Bosphorus
Short hops such as Eminönü–Üsküdar or Kabataş–Üsküdar are cheap scenery and often faster than fighting bridge traffic. Istanbulkart works on many city ferry lines.

Peak tip: on Tram T1, board one stop before the busiest tourist stops if the first carriage looks packed — the next tram is usually 3–6 minutes away.

Must-sees

Museums & landmarks — practical notes

The Historic Peninsula (Sultanahmet) packs the classics within walking distance. Buy timed tickets ahead when you can — queues grow fast after mid-morning, especially on weekends and cruise-ship days.

Hagia Sophia

45–90 min · security check

Mosque with layered history. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Women may need a scarf; shoes off inside. Arrive early for calmer photos.

Topkapı Palace

2–3 hours · large grounds

Ottoman palace complex with courtyards and views. The Harem needs a separate ticket. Mornings are quieter; bring water in summer.

Blue Mosque area

30–60 min · prayer pauses

Visit with Hagia Sophia across the square. Shoes off; shoulders and knees covered. Visits briefly pause during prayer times — check the board at the entrance.

Basilica Cistern

30–45 min · cool underground

Atmospheric underground cistern a short walk from Hagia Sophia. Book ahead on busy days; the walkways can be damp — watch your step.

Suggested half-day route

Start at Hagia Sophia → walk to the Blue Mosque courtyard → continue to the Basilica Cistern → finish at Topkapı if you still have energy (or save Topkapı for a full morning). Break for tea in Sultanahmet; avoid the most aggressive restaurant touts on the main square.

Stay online

Tips that save time and money

Cash & cards
Cards work widely in hotels, restaurants and metro machines. Keep some TRY for small ferries, tips, markets and older kiosks. Prefer ATMs inside bank branches at night.
Taxi
Prefer hotel-called taxis or reputable apps. Check the meter is running. For airports, a pre-booked transfer removes negotiation.
Scams to skip
“Friendly” strangers inviting you to a bar, carpet shops with pressure sales, and unmarked money changers with rates that look too good.
Dress & mosques
Shoulders and knees covered; women may need a scarf. Shoes off at the entrance. Carry a light cover-up in summer.
Friday & prayer times
Some mosque visits pause during prayer. Check opening notes on your ticket page or at the door before you queue.

Do I need cash on day one?

A little TRY helps for small purchases, but cards work at airports and most machines. Withdraw inside the terminal if you need cash immediately.

Is the metro safe with luggage?

Yes if you travel light. With large suitcases, prefer a private transfer or coach — escalators and transfers are harder at peak times.

Can I visit Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in one morning?

Yes. Do Hagia Sophia first when doors open, then walk across to the Blue Mosque. Add the Cistern if queues look short.
